Luca Lo Piccolo

Ph.D. · Head, Functional Genomics Unit (FGU), CMUTEAM · Co-Lead, NeuroFly2Cure

Luca Lo Piccolo is a molecular cell biologist and translational neuroscientist leading the Functional Genomics Unit at the Center of Multidisciplinary Technology for Advanced Medicine (CMUTEAM), Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University. In NeuroFly2Cure, he co-leads the core discovery programs on Neuronal Resilience, Brain Aging and Neurodegeneration and Motor Neuron Diseases, and oversees the integration of Drosophila and human neuronal/iPSC systems to uncover mechanisms of selective neuronal vulnerability and to nominate translational targets and therapeutic strategies. His research focuses on how chromatin readers, ER stress pathways and lncRNA-mediated mechanisms shape neuronal resilience in ALS and related disorders, including discoveries on YEATS-domain proteins (YEATS2, ENL/AF9), ER-stress drivers such as ERO1A, natural-product modulators of ER resilience (S88), and fly-based pipelines that pinpoint drug candidates like fingolimod for TDP-43 proteinopathy.
